Dining in PEI

Whether you're grabbing a quick bite at a local diner or sitting down for a 3 course meal, you'll find sumptuous food across the island no matter where you go. That's because the food industry is the biggest contributor to Prince Edward Island's economy and locals pride themselves on surpassing the island's already-famous culinary reputation. And, with PEI's fertile soil & abundant farms, you're guaranteed the freshest & finest ingredients on your plate thanks to the support of local produce.

Island Insider: PEI prides itself on its 'green & clean' reputation, with wholesome & tasty food. There are numerous food-themed festivals & events throughout the year, so check out our list of food festivals to incorporate some local flavours in your vacation.

Local Specialities

When you're surrounded by warm sea waters it can mean only one thing: an abundance of seafood & so, most local restaurants include it on their menu.

If shellfish is your thing, then Prince Edward Island's seafood restaurants will delight your taste buds with delicious lobsters cooked to perfection. Other shellfish specialities include tasty clams & delectable oysters.

Island Insider: Don't miss the International Shellfish Festival in September; the “Biggest kitchen party in Atlantic Canada” where shellfish in all forms & flavours abound.

Another local culinary must is the PEI potato. This is a firm favourite with locals & visitors who sample its unique flavour – which is a result of the island's rich red soil. Small, round potatoes are boiled with their skins, mashed & then served with plenty of butter, salt & pepper. You'll find this speciality all over the island, as well as other appetizing dishes featuring the local potato.

Of course, there's always the local fish cakes, which combine two of the island's specialities (seafood & potatoes) into one tasty morsel.

Island Insider: Take the local flavour home - purchase your own Prince Edward Island potatoes from local markets or stores.
